Water baptism represents our identification as believers with the death, burial, and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. Being baptized doesn’t save a person. Romans 10:9 says, “If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” Baptism is a way for someone to publicly declare that they are a follower of Jesus.
